The Institute of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Peking University was established in 2005 to foster research related to Western Asia among scholars at Peking University. It is the research home of leading Chinese scholars in Assyriology, Egyptology, Hittitology, Hebrew Bible and Jewish Studies, Islamic Studies and Persian Studies.


The CAENO Foundation, New York, is a non-profit organization established in 2000. It supports historical and physical research pertaining to the chronology of events, epochs and civilizations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will the conference papers be published?
A: The proceedings will be translated and published in both English and Chinese, probably in the same volume.

Q: What information do I need to provide in my pre-registration?
A: Your name and affiliation in an email to origins@caeno.org, with or without your ideas for a paper.

Q: Registration fee?
A: Attendance at the conference is free of charge.

Q: Accommodations?
A: Participants with a paper presentation will have their accommodations furnished free or discounted on a case by case basis. Limited funds are available upon application to the conference committee.

Q: Transportation Cost?
A: The conference committee encourages scholars to apply for financial support from home-based sources. Limited funds are available upon application to the conference committee.

Q: Meal and Food Cost?
A: The conference will have free meals available for registered participants.

Q: Will there be poster sessions?
A: If interest develops for a Poster Session, the organizers will allot time and space for the ¡°poster¡± participants to present their views.

Q: Presentation equipment?
A: State of the art audio and visual equipments will be available during the conference.

Q: Photocopy service?
A: The conference will provide photocopy service free of charge.

Q: When is the onsite registration?
A: Registration will open in the late afternoon on Thursday, October 4, 2007. In the evening, there will be a reception which doubles as the welcoming event.

Q: Conference format?
A: Friday, Saturday and the morning on Sunday are given over to the presentation of papers. The breakdown of sessions is not inscribed in baked clay. Roughly, we expect there will be seven sessions, four talks each morning and five on each of the two afternoons, for an projected total of twenty-two papers. There are no parallel sessions, just one speaker at a time.

Q: Tours?
Please note the answer below is out of date, it is kept here for record keeping purpose; as of 3rd of July, 2007, the organizers of the conference have published updated information on the tour options based on various requests collected from registered participants. Please refer to the Tour Options page for detailed information.

A: Sunday afternoon participants will get to see the sights. Currently, three options are being explored:

*A 'must see' visit to local sites, such as the Forbidden City or the Summer Palace (Nominal fees will be charged to defray the cost, to be announced in the formal registration form).
*A scholarly excursion to examine archaeologically significant artifacts (Under discussion with relevant parties, and nominal fees might be charged to defray the transportation cost).
*A change of pace tour of the 'hot' Beijing art scene, led by New York MoMA curator Barbara London (free of charge).
